SAUNDERS COUNTY
HISTORY
Saunders county was created by the Territorial Legislature on January 26, 1856. At that time it was called Calhoun county after John C. Calhoun. Calhoun was not a popular name at that time as there was a government surveyor who was suspected of corruption and graft. So in 1862, the Territorial Legislature changed the name to Saunders in honor of territorial governor Alvin Saunders.
